Hypnosis is something like the state you are in when driving your car, day dreaming, reading a book, or playing a musical instrument and you have tuned out the unimportant stimuli around you.
Anytime you are doing an activity but are on automatic pilot, your mind has moved into a light trance state. You can respond to the phone ringing or a person approaching if needed.
